susangarriques.com - colored pencil art

While creating the painting of Molly, I took pictures of the progress along the way. Sometimes when I'm creating a painting, I find that at some point it goes through an "awful" stage. It can be hard to refrain from starting all over. With this painting, though, each stage was still making my heart happy. I thought it might be fun to put these pictures up so that you can see how my animal portraits happen.

sketch
I start my paintings with a sketch. Working from a printed photo and my computer screen, I sketch with my paintbrush. My goal at this point is to get the basic lines down and also to include areas of light.

Blocked In
Next step is to block in the colors. I did the background first. Then Molly. I created the "black" with Phthalo Blue, Cadmium Red Light, and a touch of Cadmium Yellow Light.

Almost Done
Going back to the background again, the next step is to get it pretty much "done". There are a few spots that need to be finished up. Then, move on to Molly again. Make the darks darker and the lights lighter. It is almost done at this stage.

Final

Here she is. All done.

This image appears quite a bit lighter than the "almost done" image. This is a photography issue. I think that the final was taken outside and the "almost done" was taken inside. The "almost done" photo is a bit on the dark side.

With Molly
Molly's owners framed the painting and took a photo of Molly on the couch under her painting. What fun it is to see it in place.
